Six Questions with Documentary Filmmaker Karl Sutton



Karl Sutton spent over 20 years in audio post production working on a diverse range of projects for clients including Disney, Discovery Channel, McDonalds, Cirque du Soleil, and many more.

His film Tranzformed about fifteen ex-transgender individuals screens at the Churches Making Movies Christian Film Festival on Sunday, Ocober 15th at 11:30 am.

What is your film background?

I started off in audio and had a 20 year career doing all sorts of tasks including film work (ADR, mixing, sound design) and then transitioned into editing a weekly TV show which then lead to filming the TV show which then lead to filming & editing three documentaries.

As a Christian I see myself impacting the film industry?

By bringing people’s stories of God’s transforming grace to the screen and dealing with difficult topics that aren’t frequently talked about in the church.

What was the biggest challenge you overcame to make your film?

The biggest challenge we overcame was trimming the excellent interviews down to a manageable timeline and keeping the stories somewhat intact.

Who are your biggest influences in film and why?

Not sure that I could pinpoint a specific influence in film.

What is the funniest or weirdest thing that has ever happened to you on set?

Often times our locations would be churches that supposedly had nothing going on when we were scheduled to film & it was comical how many times we showed up with some sort of distraction being present, from painters to lawn services.

What is your favorite Bible verse? How does this influence your filmmaking?

Favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. I think the verse speaks for itself!
