Dinosaur Heart is a short documentary by Tac Coluccio. The film follows Treffen Rexius and his family whose life was turned upside down after receiving devastating news that baby Treffen had Congestive Heart Failure. The film screens at the Churches Making Movies Christian Film Festival, October 11-13 in Basking Ridge, NJ.
As a hard-pressed Atheist, Coluccio started Dinosaur Heart in hopes of telling a good story. He had just began film school and wanted to get his hands dirty with a cool project. He had no idea of the road ahead of him. He not only learned a ton related to film making, editing, lighting and other technical details, he found himself curious about this incredible faith he saw in Brock and Adrianne Rexius.
Q. What is your film background?
A. Dinosaur Heart is my first documentary and God has used it tremendously in my life. As a hard pressed atheist almost 4 years ago, I began Dinosaur Heart in hopes of telling a good story. But in the middle of production God revealed Himself to me so obviously that I could do nothing else but surrender my life to Him. At the same time I was attending film school to work in the G&E department for other projects. Currently, I freelance full time in the film and photography industries as well as run Dinosaur Heart Ministries- a Christian non-profit that stems from the documentary and supports struggling believers.
Q. As a Christian, how do you see yourself impacting the film industry?
A. The Christian film industry is incredibly important. With what seems like a united front against our Christian values in the secular industry, I believe it to be a duty of mine to stand up for what Jesus loves by making faith based films. Individuals remember what they experience and feel more than what they hear, and because of this we have an incredible responsibility to create God honoring content for them to consume.
Q. What was the biggest challenge you overcame to make your film?
When I began Dinosaur Heart I was an atheist, it was never meant to be a Christian film. When I became a Christian about a year into the project I had to completely restructure the entire film... We had to schedule separate voice over sessions to record statements and questions about God, the 'take away' of the film had to be rethought, ect. The logistical issues aside, it was a challenge but all worth it.
Q. Who are your biggest influences in film and why?
A. One of my biggest influences in film is Steve Hoover, the director of the documentary "Blood Brother." When making my film I consulted his regularly for inspiration and ideas. I liked how he didn't shy away from the difficult and hard to watch scenes, it was real and vivid... Though it was also inspiring and respectful through the difficult times.
Q. What is your favorite Bible verse? And how does this influence your filmmaking? 21 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. Lamentations 3:21-26 The Lord is always good and faithful, this verse reminds we why I do what I do- to make Jesus known.
